Hi, my name's Phil.

Thank you for your interest in my writing services. If you're looking for a great copywriter to work with you towards achieving your marketing goals – then I may be able to help you...

"Phil is a terrific writer! He has the uncanny ability to turn my own thoughts into words in the tone that "I" wanted it.

He is also very good at doing research for topics that are not easy to write about; it's not everyday that you can work with someone as patient and sincere as Phil..."

Let’s face it; there are so many copywriters online that your problem isn’t so much where to find a writer – but how do you decide which provider to use? Especially if you understand just how essential copywriting is to creating, building and developing a relationship with your audience.

You probably found this site by clicking on a link in one of my articles. Perhaps you saw a post of mine in a forum. Or maybe you were sent here by word of mouth... However you heard about my services, one thing is sure:

You need a top quality writer who combines solid writing skills, with creative ability and experience – and has an in depth understanding of the online business space.

Now, let me tell you how I fit that bill ... Many online copywriters only have a few years behind them, and have no real experience of the bigger story beyond their specific writing tasks. I'm different. I have 15+ years experience working as a creative in the offline marketing and advertising industries, in London. Beginning my career back in 1985 as a design studio junior, I gained a hands-on education in every aspect of advertising and marketing techniques on my way to becoming an art director. From layout design to typography, high concept copy to down-and-dirty call to action – my real-world apprenticeship means that years later I am never out of my depth. And I will always be able to deliver.

Sure, there are plenty of writers out there making money from their writing online, and there are plenty of 'ok' online copywriters. But I can tell you – it takes more than a command of English to cut-it in the offline creative industries! During my time as employee, freelance and small business owner, I have been engaged by dozens of studios and agencies – including top talent centres such as McCann Erickson and Leo Burnett. And many others besides. My creative ability has opened the door to studios all over London where I have created, produced, and otherwise contributed to the success of 100s of advertising and marketing campaigns for 100s of companies. Big and small.

Here's a quick list of businesses I've created work for during my offline career: Marks & Spencer, Xerox, VW Audi, Volvo, Yamaha, Next, Armstrong, Premier Percussion, Tannoi, Twyfords, John Frieda, Budgens Supermarkets, Gillette, Rowntree Mackintosh, Nestles, AKG, The Royal Mail, The British Government, Macromedia, Adobe, Lunn Poly, Osram Lighting, Nickelodeon TV, APA Magazines, SFX Entertainment, Cameron Mackintosh Theatre Productions, Apollo Theatres, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group Theatre Productions...
...and many more...

The truth is, though – the online space is different from offline media. Sure, there are plenty of similarities. And I guess that's why there are plenty of journalists, advertising copywriters and general publishing industry types selling their services online. Apparently, there's enough business to go around. But there's more to online copywriting than simply being a writer. Anyone offering to write for you must prove they understand the difference between words in print and messages on-screen. And they need to prove that to you before you hire them, or else you might buy a nice piece of writing but get no measurable improvement in your business.

Where's my proof?

I specialise in Direct Response copywriting – and what that means is that I specialise in the kind of writing which gets conversions.

I'm sure we all agree that one of the main differences between online and offline media is the high level of interactivity, and response, which online media provokes in readers. An online reader – your customer – is not the passive reader of a magazine. It's therefore necessary for online copywriting to engage readers so they don't browse away or hit the back button when faced with your marketing message. And it's important that a reader not only reads your message but responds to it also. Online copywriting must direct the reader towards a desired response, such as clicking a link, subscribing to a newsletter, or making an order. If the reader doesn't respond to your copy, then your copy isn't acting as a marketing tool – and your copywriting isn't copywriting at all, it's 'content'.

As a Direct Response copywriter, whatever it is I am writing about – whether it be an ebook, a service, a product, a membership... or the philosophical challenges of modern ethics – the main objective is to capture the reader's attention, hook the reader into the features and benefits of the client's business, and direct that reader towards a specific response. My training and experience in Direct Response copywriting means I can provide your copy with the best 'bang for your buck'.

And just in case you're thinking: 'I like the sound of your experience, Phil, but copywriter 'x' has a great college education and it's really important that a writer has that 'hinterland' of academic study to 'round-out' that professional experience'. Well, me too. After I graduated from art school I did post grad studies at the world renowned Central St Martins School of Art. I also did PhD research there (by invitation). I've studied both undergrad philosophy at London University, under professor Grayling, and studied for the creative writing diploma at London University, too. I also took writing classes with the acclaimed Arvon Foundation and have trained as a TEFL English Language Teacher – and this is just the start of my list....

...Throughout my 44 years (that's how old I am) I have taken courses on a range of subjects and activities from literature to photography, to rock climbing. I love learning, and I love writing about what I've learnt – and that's another reason why I'm an asset to my clients. I'm a natural reader, researcher and writer – with hands-on experience in the field of 'writing-for-conversion'.

A Writing Service – With The Emphasis On 'Service'

I hope I have been able to show you that as a copywriter I have the education, the skills, the real experience and ability to write copy which your customers will love and which will work best for your business. If there's anything else you'd like to know, or if there's anything you're unsure about, then I welcome your emails or calls so we can communicate more freely about your specific needs.

The reality is that even with all the necessary skills, experience and ability; many writers just can't provide a reliable service. (And many services just can't provide reliable writers!)

Why is this? I think it's partly due to lack of studio experience – many writers have spent their whole time as freelancers or part-timers so they have never had a creative director 'breathing down their neck' to make sure they are on time and their work is presentable. There's something you don't learn at college!

But also, I think there's a perception among many that being creative allows a certain 'leeway'. That somehow deadlines are stifling and don't apply to creative work which needs to be nurtured. That's all poppycock, of course. I've worked with, met, and trained with some great professional copywriters and they would all agree that good service is part of the job. In fact, it's something to take pride in – it's part of the 'craft' element of professional writing.

So let me tell you how I work For My Clients – And How I Provide The Best Service I Possibly Can

First and foremost, I don't charge you for getting in touch with me and discussing a potential project. Some do, I don't. If you have a project in mind and you'd like to see what I might do to help you with it simply fill out the form at the bottom of this page, or click on the tab at the top of this page, and send me a message. If you do this you'll get a FREE CONSULTATION and a FREE QUOTE with no obligation to use my services. As far as I am concerned, this is akin to a one-on-one meeting which I would expect to take place before any offline project was offered to me and so I extend this professional courtesy to any of my potential online clients also.

If you agree to my quote and initial consultation proposal, and you offer me a project to work on, we would then move on to the brief. If you already have a copywriting brief – in writing – then I'll read it and come back to you with any questions or comments. If you don't have anything formally prepared (and many don't), then we would have a detailed discussion and I will write up a formal brief for the project. The brief will contain all the details of the work to be done, the deadlines and format, the number of words, the marketing message and copy goals. The brief acts as a contract between us and a 'roadmap' for my writing work.

The 'Brief' Is The Foundation Upon Which Your Satisfaction Is Built

With a proper brief in place, you the client can be confident that your needs have been expressed and will be acted upon. The writing doesn't start unless you are satisfied that the brief represents ALL your needs. In this way, you can be confident that a full transcript is in place which states the terms of our agreement together. My job is to 'answer' that brief. When you receive the finished work you will be able to see precisely how the needs of the brief are responded to in the copy I write for you.

And although this is extremely rare, if you are unhappy with any part of the copywriting you receive, I will redraft or rewrite it to your satisfaction – at no extra cost to you. So long as the brief hasn't changed then I will work on the copy until you are entirely satisfied with it and it answers the brief in a way that you are happy with.

Once the brief has been written and agreed to I will proceed to do as much research as I can so I can engage as thoroughly as possible with your market and your business. The more research I can do on your behalf, the better. Fortunately, I have over 15 years experience working with a wide range of companies and businesses so I probably have a head start but no two businesses are entirely the same and I will make sure I understand what makes yours unique so I can convey that uniqueness to your customers. When it comes to writing, the quality and detail of research is really a core necessity. Any writing which doesn't have good research will tend to be generic, full of fluff, filler, and even hype. When proper research has been done the writing is detailed, informative and authoritative.

Often, discovering more about your company or market will throw up new ideas or directions. At all times I will stay in contact with you, and be available to you for communication. In my opinion one of the fundamental qualities of a good service provider is their ability to communicate and be available to their clients and customers. I am determined that this quality is one which my service is able to excel in.

When the writing is completed I will send you a draft to read and respond to. If you have any comments or suggestions I will promptly react to those and, if any additional writing is required, I will get on and do it immediately. Finally, I can supply the copy in any file format most convenient to you.

When you engage my copywriting services you don’t just get another freelance writer – you gain a partner in your business success.

One of the many lessons I have learned about online communications is that good copywriting is a business asset online, in a way that it never is in offline media. Effective online copy is like a business partner who never sleeps: who is always in perfect health and meets and greets every single visitor at any time of day or night to explain how your product or service is the solution to their problem.

Good online copywriting is your top salesperson, your concierge, your receptionist and advocate all rolled into one. It never sleeps, never takes a day off, never stops for lunch or has a bust up with its significant other. It will continue to do the job you asked it to do – to its very best ability – every hour of every day.

The copywriting you get from writingbyphil.com reflects that understanding, and my service backs it up. When you hire my services you don’t just get a jobbing writer you get a partner with a stake in your online success. I will be there to communicate with you at any time during the duration of your project, I will work with you in a reliable and professional manner – and I will share the concerns and ambitions you hold for your business. The success of my writing is a success for us both.

Here are just a few things great copy can do for your business:

Increase Your Sales Figures With Goal-Driven, Targeted Copy Which Persuades Your Customers To Respond

If it’s simply sales results you want to increase then I’ll write sales copy which precisely targets the needs of your customer, and builds a bridge of persuasion between them and your offer.

Well researched, informed and targeted copy, written in the appropriate style, will draw your customer towards your offer. Lesser copywriters will offer you over-hyped headlines and obscure ideas backed up by fluff and cliches. Untrained copywriters will try to sell to your customer on features, selling to the head instead of the heart.

With my decade and a half of hands on experience working on successful marketing and advertising campaigns I can offer you a professional solution which will reveal your product or service to your customer in the way they are most likely to respond to – without harming your brand.

Attract More Visitors Away From Your Competitors' Ads And Onto Your Site With Ad Campaigns Your Customers Respond To

However you’re advertising your site, small ads, banner ads, PPC or anything else – I will write tantalising ads which target the precise impulse your customer is feeling and cause them to click on your ad and visit your site.

So many ads are a waste of money purely because they don't properly target the customer's state of mind, and present an 'actionable' call to action. Whether it's a long copy ad or a Google Adwords ad, the fundamental principles are the same. If you want your ads to get a response - then hire a Direct Response copywriter!

Boost Your Reputation With Highly Targeted, Promotions
Which Your Customers Will Thank You For!

A good offer properly presented, and delivered, is something your customer will love you for. And they will return again and again. The right copywriter will be able to bring your offer and your customer together with a bridge made of persuasive, informative, and targeted words.

'Sell' may be a four-letter word, but it doesn't need to be a bad one. Don't spoil a great offer by using a poor writer.

Build Your Brand With Copy Written To Be On-Target,
On-Brand And On-Your-Customer's-Mind!

Whether you need copy for your website, your brochure, your catalogue, your press release, your ads or promotions, your landing pages or emails – whatever you need copywriting for, it needs to build your brand.

Every piece of copy which is associated with your business – will also build, or undermine, your brand. Every piece of writing I create for you will do two jobs. It will fulfil the task it is required to fulfil, but it will also reflect and promote your brand and core proposition.

Get To The Front Of The Line–And In-Front Of Your Customers' Eyes! By Getting To The Top Of Search Engine Listings!

SEO copywriting is becoming more and more important to businesses as they compete for organic traffic on the search engines. Your business needs to employ every possible means to build its reputation and gain a better position in the search engine listings. A copywriter who is able to work with keywords and optimization techniques can write both for your customer and the search engine spiders.

Every piece of copy on your site has the potential to work for you twice as hard – with years of experience in the online space I am totally up to date with the newest techniques for optimizing copy, using keywords, LSI and meta info to ensure your pages get listed above your competitors. Whether as part of my writing service or as a specialized SEO copywriter – I can help you.

This is What You Can Expect From My Writing:

On Target. You can expect more than market research. I will research your market's concerns, needs and desires and deliver copy which focuses on each of these and is written in a tone of voice your customer can immediately relate to...

Persuasive. Direct Response copywriting is writing dedicated to the art of persuasion. Words that intrigue, words that encourage, and words that direct the reader towards a response. Direct Response Copywriting makes a bridge between your audience and your product and brings the two together...

On Brand. Copy which remains true to the spirit of your product or business. Copy which reflects your core proposition and communicates your message without harming your brand...

Understands Business. I've sat across the table with CEOs, Directors, Partners, Senior Management, Middle Management, Office Staff, Shop Floor workers, Engineers, Technicians, Professionals, Amateurs, Entrepreneurs... people from all kinds of businesses with all kinds of needs. I'm a mature professional with an understanding of business from both sides of the table...

Creative. Out of ideas?... I'll give you not just one, but at least THREE proposals for EVERY brief. I know it's changed these days since computers took over the studios but when I started working in the 1980s the policy was that you never presented less than three ideas for every brief - that's how I learned, and that's how I work!

Style. Being able to write isn't just a matter of stringing words together and getting the spelling and grammar right. It helps, but it's not everything. Correct 'Style' is the difference between someone reading your copy, and someone moving on after a few lines. Good Style understands which are the right words, and the right order of words, to correctly communicate what you are trying to say. And good Style is choosing the appropriate 'voice' for the readership, so the reader allows you to guide their thoughts. Getting the style right is a core ingredient to producing well informed, readable and valuable writing which your customer will love...

Informed. Spending time researching a project before beginning to write is essential if the copy is to persuade your customer to take action. Well informed, well researched, authoritative copy stands shoulders above the mass of hype, fluff and padding which so many other copywriters create when they haven't done the research necessary...

Quality. Good research and attention to detail is the basis of good writing. Quality is the outcome. If your reader gains new information from your reading your copy, then they will respond. If your reader was searching for information on a topic and discovered the answer in your copy, then they will respond. If your reader lost an hour or more because they happened to land on your site and became so engrossed in what they were reading that they forgot what time it was, then they will respond. The basis of good quality is research and accuracy, the result is good value - and customers who respond...

Well Researched. I'm a natural researcher. In fact in many ways, it's my favourite part of the job. Whatever the subject I am writing on, you can trust me to research it thoroughly so I am able to write with knowledge and understanding of the relevant details. This is one of my core skills. Whatever the topic, I will first familiarise myself with the essential details and underlying assumptions so my copy will, first and foremost, inform and educate – well researched copy is respectful of the reader, and the reader will appreciate you for it...

Accuracy. I triple check all information which appears in my writing. It's not good enough just to read a couple of web pages and then write some copy; with so many untrained writers and webmasters online it is possible that the one or two sources checked are misguided or just plain wrong. Both in my studies and my professional work I have learned to check my facts – and check them again. I am a natural researcher and do not cut corners. I enjoy getting it right; and I enjoy communicating what I know. I take pride in both...

Technically Correct. Grammar, Spelling, Syntax – Accuracy doesn't just mean factual accuracy. I check my spelling and grammar and invariably set my writing aside to check it again an hour or so later for readability and style. I like good English; I enjoy attending to the flow of prose. Whatever I am writing, I work on my copy so it is accurate, clear, and an enjoyable reading experience...
